GNU Chess is the GNU Chess program; it is extremelly powerful, as it gets about 2000 points according to the US Chess Federation Standard (to have an comparison : Gary Kasparov: 2849; Vladimir Kramnik: 2772).
The excellency of GNU Chess has been widely recognised, as it is now default on Mac OS X.
