En resum, el gestor d'arrencada és el primer programa que s'executa a l'engegar l'ordinador. És el responsable de carregar i transferir el control al nucli del sistema operatiu (per exemple Hurd o Linux). El nucli inicialitza la resta del sistema operatiu (p.e. GNU).
