In breve, il boot loader è il primo programma software che viene caricato quando il computer viene acceso. E' responsabile per il caricamento e il trasferimento del controllo al sistema operativo (come ad esempio Hurd o Linux). Il kernel, in seguito, inizializza il resto del sistema operativo.
