LaTeX (MiKTeX) 2.4    Download

MikTeX is a Windows port of the famous TeX typesetting system.

TeX is not a word processor, like Open Office, but a typesetting program: it uses a programming language similar to HTML to produce DVI, PDF and PS documents, which are not directly editable : to modify them, you need to edit the source code.

In the scientific world, articles and books are often typeset using TeX, but TeX is also used in a wider area of edition. You will soon find it is indispensable for all your reports.

TeX runs on virtually all operating systems known of humanity, which allows transfering files from one computer to another without the slightest loss of quality -- a common problem with word processors. It allows typessetting of thousand-page books with lots of equations, tables or images, with no risk of system crashes or ugly document.

LaTeX helps structuring documents, and also features powerfull functions for cross-references, index and tables of contents. It is highly customisable, and the default are set to the standards of professional edition, which confers a beauty and elegance that will help make your documents noticeable.

Please read the installation procedure in the Documentation section (PDF version here). Packages also are on the CD, in the MiKTeX-2.zip file.
